Kenya tour operators - Meet our team

About Kenya and Tanzania Travel Plan

Kenya and Tanzania Travel Plan is a small-internet based Kenya tour operator, offering you a unique way of travelling around Kenya and Tanzania. Our Kenya travel specialists will help you build your own trip, handing you complete control of your holiday. We pride ourselves on providing excellent service levels which continue throughout the life of your booking.

Kenya and Tanzania Travel Plan is part of Rickshaw Travel, an online adventure tour operator made by travellers for travellers. It is born out of the idea that there are hardly any independent travel options available for more adventurous travellers.

Our trips are very individual, so we're able to use small-scale, authentic accommodation with local character and warm welcomes. With Rickshaw Travel, you won't find large group coach tours but instead you'll travel by trains, buses, private car, planes, and sometimes minibus. Flexibility and independence are fundamental, which is why we organise as much or as little as our clients wish.

We also like to give something back to local communities, which is why we sponsor various charity projects. See our responsible travel page for more information.

We're able to keep our prices low because we don't produce flashy brochures or run luxury shops. However you're more than welcome to visit our Kenya and Tanzania specialists during your travel planning! We are based in Brighton, on the South Coast and we're the sister company of round the world specialists, Travel Nation.

My obsession with Africa began in 2006 when I spent 3 months volunteering on a game reserve in South Africa. The excitement of a game drive in the African bush will never get old for me, I just keep going back for more.

That taster spurred me on to explore more of Africa and I set off on a 6 month trip around Southern and Eastern Africa last year. I loved my time in Kenya and Tanzania, the safari there is like nothing on earth. Setting up our tents amongst a herd of zebra and having an elephant interrupt our lunch was a definite highlight.

Nothing really compares to the open plains of the Serengeti, which is every bit as awe inspiring as those nature documentaries suggest. I was even lucky enough to see a lioness hunting a herd of zebra during a game drive in the Ngorongoro crater, such an amazing experience. And don’t even get me started on Zanzibar, a trip of just a few days turned into just over a month! I just couldn’t quite drag myself away from those sandy beaches, Kilimanjaro beers and the most spectacular sunsets I’ve ever seen.

Africa to me is a place of adventure, of possibilities. There is something special about it, something which defines it from all other places as unique. It's one of the last places on earth that's still truly wild, and there is nothing better than waking up to an African dawn.

I grew up in South Africa, and in my twelve years there I gained a real appreciation for all things African. I remember it especially for the vast landscapes, the summer storms, the amazing wildlife, and the friendly people.

I haven’t been to Kenya or Tanzania, but they are next on my list. The wildebeest migration, the Maasai warriors... I’ve seen the documentaries plenty of times, but now I want to go and see it for myself!

Haydn Wrath

Managing director

I left the University of East Anglia in 1984 and escaped what seemed a very grim England by spending the rest of the 1980s travelling and working round the world. During this time I put in some usual stints as an English teacher in Tokyo, a landscape gardener in Sydney and a tarmac layer's assistant in Alaska. In 1990, I joined Bridge the World Travel Centre in London as manager of the World-wide department, where I was able to put my degree in Politics and Philosophy to good use.

I fulfilled my ambition to set up a specialist travel company in 2001 when I founded Travel Nation, and later in 2008 Rickshaw Travel.

I have continued to travel to many countries over the last couple of decades and am always utterly charmed by the people and the atmosphere I experience. Independent travel has so much going for it that it really can be all things to all people. Also of course, in common with so many other visitors, when travelling, I am in food paradise...
